Memory Loss: Understanding age-related memory loss & Dementia This package was created to help fulfill a need for more information
about age-related memory loss. As people in our communities age, the United
States may become divided into two groups: those who have age-related
mental disorders and those who are providing services or care for them.
While this seminar was created for the latter, many volunteer groups composed
largely of older adults can benefit directly from In the seminar, the participants will learn: Our memory changes as we age. We may not remember things with the kind of immediacy and clarity that we did previously. But little things help, like making lists and staying organized. Crossword puzzles and word games are important. The impact of a good night’s sleep and adequate nutrition (your plate should be so colorful that it looks like a pile of color crayons) should not be underestimated. More and more, the link between lung capacity and a good memory is discussed in research. Physical activity affects many things in our lives, including memory. Perhaps you could just think of it like this: your brain is a muscle. Exercise it. Who can use this package? Anyone who provides services to the elderly will find the information in this package useful and volunteers or staff will greatly benefit from receiving this vital information about memory loss. The materials are simple and easy to present to groups with a variety of educational backgrounds. Research has shown that adults have a variety of learning styles and
we have developed these materials to meet those needs. For tactile learning,
we have provided laminated sheets and suggestions for materials or items
that you can pass around the class during the seminar. The video or PowerPoint
presentation on CD (or optional overhead transparencies) provides assistance
for visual learners and readers. The student workbook provides further
assistance for readers and tactile learners including printed slides with
room to take notes. The activities provide an opportunity to practice
the communication skills and further reinforce learning. These seminar materials were created by Sharon Johnson of Oregon State University and have been used effectively to educate volunteers and home health aides. Package includes presentation materials, media, and handouts.
