Medication Management: Recoginizing Medication Problems with Again Persons

This package was created to help fulfill a need for more information about medication issues. Over time research has demonstrated that the average older adult uses 5 prescription medications and 3 over-the-counter medications at any one time, but many seniors take more than a dozen prescription medications. As the number of medications increases, so does the potential for medication related problems. Medication related challenges for older adults illustrate the need for educational programs.

In the seminar, the participants will learn to:
·Understand, simplify, organize and effectively “take charge” of medications.
·Query physicians and pharmacists about medications and potential side effects.
·Identify medication approaches that are self-defeating.
·Recognize side effects and adverse reactions and learn how to avoid them.

Prescription drugs are lifesavers – but only if they are used correctly. And in the United States, nearly half of all medications aren’t taken as directed. Medications are key components of treatment regimens for older adults with chronic illnesses. Today there are 35 million individuals over the age of 65 in the United States but that number is expected to rise to 77 million by 2030. Adults over age 65 buy 30% of all prescription drugs and 40% of all over-the-counter drugs as reported by a the Food and Drug Administration in 1998. Yet they only represent about 13% of total population.

Who can use this package?

Anyone who provides services to the elderly will find the information in this package useful and volunteers or staff will greatly benefit from receiving this vital information about memory loss. The materials are simple and easy to present to groups with a variety of educational backgrounds.

Research has shown that adults have a variety of learning styles and we have developed these materials to meet those needs. For tactile learning, we have provided laminated sheets and suggestions for materials or items that you can pass around the class during the seminar. The video or PowerPoint presentation on CD (or optional overhead transparencies) provides assistance for visual learners and readers. The student workbook provides further assistance for readers and tactile learners including printed slides with room to take notes. The activities provide an opportunity to practice the communication skills and further reinforce learning.

These seminar materials were created by Sharon Johnson of Oregon State University and have been used effectively to educate volunteers and home health aides. Package includes presentation materials, media, and handouts.
